Children’s Martial Arts Programs
WTTU is a great kid’s martial arts school because we provide safe, fun and entertaining classes in Edmonton and Sherwood Park. Our instructors are focused, exciting and motivating. We teach an age specific curriculum in a well structured, disciplined format, keeping in line with the time tested principles of martial arts training. We inject life skills training into each lesson, to instil our students with the many benefits of martial arts such as respect, discipline and focus. These life lessons are practiced and ultimately understood through various methods of training such as traditional Taekwondo forms, kicking, punching, grappling, sparring, board breaking, weapons training, success skills testing, and tournaments. All these activities are taught and practiced in a safe and controlled environment. For example, the kids are fully outfitted with protective equipment when sparring and tournament matches are controlled by trained and qualified judges.
Our classes are 30 minutes to 45 Minutes in length. 30 Minutes for Classes strctly targeted for our Youngest Childrens group our 4 and 5 year olds. Most Children 6 up to 12 can expect an exciting 45 minute class. Teenagers are encouraged to train with the adults for role modelling, and can attend classes 1 hour in length along side the adults. This provides our Teenagers a no nosense training environment the will find relaxing, mature, and challenging.
You can expect increased focus, discipline and respect for them selves and others. Policy for our students is to go home after their first day at class and clean their room better then ever! You will enjoy how our instructors get involved in home chores, school grades, fitness, and home work
Our Children’s Martial Arts Programs provide great fun and successful results for all types of kids, boys and girls, big and tiny, heavy and light, short and tall, wide and thin, young and old kids that can join our program and expereince real success! – All children are welcome.

Karate for Kids
There are many reasons for kids to become involved in Martial Arts. The WTTU has developed a program based on traditional Taekwondo for kids called “Karate for Kids”. With over 30 years of research with childhood education and development specialists, the Karate for Kids Program is based in a lifetime learning concept in addition to technical skills. The building blocks for our system are monthly themes such as:
- Goal Setting
- Confidence
- Positive Mental Attitude
- Self Esteem
- Self Discipline
- Respect
- Integrity
- Persistence
- Focus
In addition our monthly themes are coupled with a reward system to help improve all areas of a child’s life – Home, School, and of course Taekwondo.
Children’s classes are broken down by age and experience. This gives an excellent student to instructor ratio, and keeps classes fun and focused.
Tiny Tigers, ages 4 and 5, follow instructors through much of their physical training. The focus is on developing confidence, trying new things, and learning participation. Training is based on improving mental focus, coordination, left, right, front and back while training in Taekwondo skills.
Tigers, ages 6 and 7, also follow instructors through much of their physical training. The focus for this age group is on developing confidence, following instructions, and participating with energy. More emphasis is placed on coordination and mental focus.
Dragons, ages 8 and 9 learn to train in groups and on their own to build responsibility and independence. Their focus is on memorizing the skills they’ve been taught, and are expected to demonstrate basic techniques more proficiently than younger kids.
Phoenix, ages 10 to 12, usually have a well developed image of self and are provided regular challenges to enhance confidence, demonstrate discipline, and train with vigor.
Juniors – 13 to 17 years old. We suggest these kids train with the adults where possible to offer a higher level of physical challenge as well as solid role modeling experience.
Don't just take our word for it... Here's what others are saying about is...
Mr. Hamilton and WTTU Family Tae Kwon Do has changed my life and helped me improve no end. Beginning in Jr. High Tae Kwon Do quickly gave me confidence and encouragement that I was needing as a young teenager. The confidence I gained from the hard work and dedication of Mr. Hamilton helped me in school presentations, as a University student I still draw on the skills I have learned at Family Tae Kwon Do when faced with public speaking. Despite training for over 6 years I am always faced with new challenges in the workout and fitness of my classes and know I can count on Tae Kwon Do to get me sweating and get my heart racing. Mr. Hamilton has a unique ability to know what every student is capable of and the encouraging atmosphere I've encountered there has pushed me far more than I ever could have gone working out on my own. Mr. Hamilton is a great instructor and mentor to all his students and is patience, commitment and heart never ceases to amaze me.
Thanks for being such a good instructor and being someone I can proudly and happily recommend:0)! Have a great day Mr Hamilton:0)!
My family and I left another club because of a lot negativity we were experiencing. Wanting to teach my children the value of perseverance, we moved on, a little bruised and a little hurt- searching for a club that would teach us not only the sport of Taekwondo but something more...we just weren't sure what it was. We found (WTTU) Family Taekwondo two and a half years ago- fell in love with the school, the instructors, the atmosphere and the concepts and values they want to instill in the participants. (WTTU) Family Taekwondo is a great place for families and individuals who want to learn, be challenged, and grow in strength, skill and confidence. We still continue to train as a family...but no more negativity. Lots of smiles, lots of growth and confidence and nothing but an amazing club to be part of.
Our daughter Kalaya is 6 years old. She joined taekwondo in March (or was it April?) of 2010. She is a tiny girl who has had several health issues in the past couple of years. She took to Mr. Hamilton and the instructors at Family Taekwondo with an attitude and drive that surprised her father and I. The difference the school has made in both her emotional and physical health is hard to describe. Amazing is the only word that comes close. When one of her classes has to be re-scheduled, she gets very upset as she takes her lessons to heart. It was one of the best decisions we have ever made for her and will continue to support her for however long she stays with the school (can we get rocking chairs?).
I decided to enroll in Family Martial Arts nearly 2 years ago and I haven't looked back. I appreciate how Mr. Hamilton and the instructors are always there with a smile and willing to help. The training environment is one which can be very intense but always friendly. All the students treat each other with respect and care. What I noticed so far in my journey for black belt is that Mr. Hamilton works with you to achieve your goals. If you want to be Canada or World Champ, he will set out a plan of attack. If you want to become better at self defense, he will be sure to help you. And even if you just want to get back into shape, he will make sure you work hard and within your own limits to succeed. There are many available programs to start with; whether you want to become a black belt or even a school owner one day, what you put into it is what you will get out of it.
